ILOVEYOU

advICE :Phauna :Worm :E-mail : ILOVEYOU
The ILOVEYOU worm took down e-mail systems throughout the Internet starting on the morning of May 4, 2000. The e-mail contained an attachment that, when opened, would e-mail a copy of itself to everyone in the Microsoft Outlook contact list.

ILOVEYOU spread because of a number of factors:

  • Many users were unware that .vbs attachments could contain software that would run when opened.
  • The idea of reading a "loveletter" was irresistable, making them want to open it.
  • Microsoft Outlook is a very popular e-mail reader; any bugs in this system allowing worms will allow them to spread very fast.
  • It spreads via mIRC (a popular Windows IRC program) as well.
